Mayaro is a thriving coastal town on the east coast of Trinidad. It could be said that it is the food basket of the island! Rich, fertile soil and a thriving fishing industry. Mayaro is also famous for its miles and miles of beach! Many people own beach houses there, and get away from the hustle and bustle of city life on weekends.
We often spend weekends in Mayaro, and last one was no exception. The drive from our home in Cascade takes about 2 1/2 hours. You will pass through the most lush lands of Valencia, and drive through Sangre Grande, another bustling town. Then its back into countryside, with winding roads and the anticipation of reaching the east coast. Through Manzanilla, another fishing village, you will drive paralell to the churning sea, right alongside the beach. Manzanilla is famous for the Cocal - a long stretch of two lane road framed the entire way by coconut trees. It was once a thriving copra village.
By the time you pass the Mayaro market and head toward the seaside roads, you can smell the salt air and hear the waves calling to you. A wonderfully peaceful and happy few days awaits!! Ahh!!! I love Mayaro!
